Fountain in the Saxon Garden

Hartwig, Edward

1970s

This view shows part of the Saxon Garden. A group of people in the foreground, an 1855 Empire style fountain in the background. Designed by Enrico Marconi, the fountain was connected to the first water-pipe system in the city.
Originally geometric, the French garden was created between 1724 and 1748 for King Augustus II as the Saxon Palace garden. Devastated during the Kościuszko Uprising of 1794, it was redesigned by James Savage into an English landscape garden between 1816 and 1827. Partially destroyed during the Warsaw Uprising, it was restored after the Second World War.
