Saxon Garden with the water tower

Hartwig, Edward

1970s or 1980s

This view shows part of the Saxon Garden with passersby and a pond in the foreground. The 1854 rotunda water tower designed by H. Marconi in the background emulates the Temple of Vesta in Tivoli, Italy.
Originally geometric, the French garden was created between 1724 and 1748 for King Augustus II as the Saxon Palace garden. Devastated during the Kościuszko Uprising of 1794, it was redesigned by James Savage into an English landscape garden between 1816 and 1827. Partially destroyed during the Warsaw Uprising, it was restored after the Second World War.
